General Requirements
No material deemed hazardous by the EPA, IDEM, OSHA, or other regulatory entity can be disposed of in “regular trash”, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, or in any other location that would be harmful to the environment, humans, animals, or agricultural products.  This includes materials such as chemicals, oils, PCBs, asbestos, lead paint residue.  In addition to the damage to the environment, serious monetary fines could be levied upon the University.

Keys to Compliance for Supervisors

• If your operations generate any waste material other than that expected to go into a standard trash can, contact the EHS Hazardous materials group for specific disposal instructions; EHS will assist in proper disposal of these materials.
• Immediately report spills or mishandling of any hazardous wastes to EHS for proper cleanup and reporting.
• Be prepared to address small spills by being familiar with the spill response section of the MSDS and having appropriate spill response supplies on hand.
• Make certain that hazardous materials are collected and stored in appropriate containers and are labeled with the name of the material and “hazardous waste”.
• Notify EHS for pickup and disposal of hazardous wastes.
• Practice waste minimization.
