Job Purpose
This is technical nursing work performing routine and direct patient care activities in a medical setting.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Assists physicians, nurses, and nurse practitioners in performing routine procedures; takes vital signs; records weight, height, and other physical information; prepares forms for tests; performs urinalysis testing and specimen transportation; assists with patient care; begins emergency measures, if necessary.
Answers patients' questions as appropriate, or refers to physician, nurse practitioners or registered nurse; provides and explains test results to patient as requested by physician or nurse practitioner.
Responds to telephone inquiries or refers to appropriate office or individual.
Provides basic patient education as instructed by physician, nurse practitioner or registered nurse.
Sets up treatment areas; prepares patient for examination and assists physicians and nurse practitioners in examination and treatment; prepares requisitions and obtains lab tests, x-rays, pharmaceuticals, etc., as directed; cleans and sterilizes instruments; records information in patient charts, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and confidentiality.
Responds to patient requests; monitors patients' condition; reports to physician, registered nurse or nurse practitioner.
Provides care to patient in accordance with physicians' or nurse practitioners' orders; administers prescribed medication; prepares charts; performs technical nursing procedures including: dressing changes, removing sutures, applying splints, etc.
Maintains inventory, supply and proper functioning of medical equipment and medications in assigned area.
Performs other tasks incidental to the provision of health care service tasks.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles of basic patient care.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Knowledge of policies for blood-borne pathogens and tuberculosis.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions in detail.
Ability to prepare records and reports.
Ability to perform routine nursing procedures accurately.
Ability to maintain an empathetic attitude toward patients.
Good communication skills.
Minimum Requirements
Education: Associate degree in Licensed Practical Nursing.
Experience: Six months experience in medical care facility.
Licenses: Indiana License of Practical Nursing.
