Job Purpose
This is professional nursing work providing direct patient care and treatment and maintaining patient records and charts.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Performs initial assessment of patient's condition; determines priority of care; begins emergency measures, if necessary.
Obtains pertinent patient information and physical history; administers preliminary physical examination; takes vital signs; responds to patient telephone calls.
Sets up treatment areas; assists physicians and nurse practitioners in examination and treatment; obtains needed lab tests, x-rays, pharmaceuticals, etc.; cleans instruments; maintains patient charts ensuring accuracy and completeness.
Monitors patient's condition; appraises quality and effectiveness of materials and equipment; assesses patient's health condition; reports to physician or nurse practitioners.
Provides care to patient in accordance with physician's or nurse practitioner's orders; administers prescribed medication; prepares charts; performs any needed medical procedures including: IVs, dressing changes, removing casts or sutures, applying splints, tests, etc.; prepares requisitions for any ordered lab procedures or X-rays; takes vital signs; arranges referrals for testing and to specialists.
Monitors activities of support staff; provides direction and guidance in proper care and use of medical resources; recommends improvements to supervisor's attention.
Provides patient education regarding health issues, medications, therapies, their condition, self-care techniques, and prevention.
Maintains supply and inventory of medical equipment, medications, and medical supplies in assigned areas.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice.
Knowledge of human physical and psycho-social needs.
Knowledge of policies for blood-borne pathogens and tuberculosis.
Ability to apply nursing techniques as directed to patient care situations.
Ability to follow oral and written directions in detail.
Ability to exercise independent judgement and react quickly and efficiently in crisis situations.
Ability to prepare and maintain records, charts, and reports.
Ability to work well with wide range of people.
Good communication skills.
Minimum Requirements
Education: Diploma of nursing from an accredited school of nursing or bachelor's degree in nursing.
Experience: One year professional nursing experience.
Registration: State Registered Nurse License.
