Job Purpose
This is technical work performing routine patient care activities in a medical setting.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Assists physicians, nurses, and nurse practitioners in performing routine procedures; takes vital signs; records weight, height, and other physical information; prepares forms for tests; performs urinalysis testing and specimen transportation; assists with patient care.
Answers patients' questions as appropriate, or refers to physician, nurse practitioners or nurse; provides and explains test results to patient as requested by physician or nurse practitioner.
Sterilizes instruments and equipment; maintains records of sterilization; monitors dates of last sterilization and re-sterilizes as necessary.
Responds to patient requests; monitors patients' condition; performs tasks relating to patient needs.
Answers phone; responds to inquiries or refers to appropriate office or individual.
Assists in basic patient education.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles of basic patient care.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Knowledge of policies for blood-borne pathogens and tuberculosis.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions in detail.
Ability to prepare records and reports.
Ability to perform routine nursing assistant procedures accurately.
Ability to maintain an empathetic attitude toward patients.
Good communication skills.
Minimum Requirements
Education: High school diploma or GED.
Experience: Six months experience in medical care facility.
