JOB PURPOSE:
Designs and fabricates specialty scenery items for theatrical productions.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists the Director of Paint and Props with the painting of the scenery and props. Organizes and cleans paint shop and paint area. Tracks inventory and maintains shop supplies and tools.
Assists with provision of properties for rehearsal and productions through organizing, altering, repairing or assembling using a variety of processes and tools. Troubleshoots problems and sets dressings.
Performs periodic maintenance and touch up of sets during show run. Runs and maintains show props during show run.
Performs preventive maintenance to shop and equipment.
Transports props and projects to and from shop, storage and stage spaces.
Supervise student crews in daily paint shop activities.
Uses tools ranging from common hand and power tools, such as hammers, hoists, saws, drills, and wrenches, to precision measuring instruments and electrical and electronic testing devices.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of theatrical painting and finishing application procedures.
Ability to calculate proper amounts of materials and equipment to complete projects.
Ability to read and interpret design and shop drawings and blueprints.
Ability to work in safe and efficient manner.
Ability to use a computer.
Ability to operate sprayer equipment (airless and conventional), use ladders safely, and use hand tools of the trade such as; brushes, rollers, scrapers, caulking guns, putty knives, etc.
Ability to safely use solvents, cleaners, abrasives and other materials that may pose health hazards to the user and others in the vicinity.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education/Experience: High school diploma or GED. BA in Scenic Art or Properties Design with two (2) years verifiable experience in theatrical design OR five (5) years verifiable experience in theatrical design.
Certifications/Licenses:
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Sitting, standing, walking, driving, climbing/ladders, squatting/kneeling, reaching, grasping, pushing/pulling, twisting/bending, lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs multiple times per shift, fingering, talking, hearing, and seeing.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Spends most time indoors with possible exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures for one hour plus. Possible exposure to distraction/uncomfortable noise levels and vibration of body or extremities. Risk of bodily injury from mechanical parts, electricity, etc. Possible exposure to fumes, odors, etc. that may affect respiration and skin.
