JOB PURPOSE:
Under general supervision prepares media and chemical solutions for the teaching and/or research laboratories.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Determines appropriate quantity and most efficient distribution method of media and chemical solutions based on orders. Assembles daily the appropriate equipment for items prepared.
Prepares chemical solutions using various concentrated caustic chemicals, bottles and solutions. Prepares media and filters for sterilization.
Delivers prepared media, chemical solutions and sterile items to appropriate locations. Moves unused completed media and chemical solutions to appropriate storage locations.
Disassembles and cleans all equipment to food-grade standards. Prepares glassware and other product containers for next day’s use. Cleans work areas.
Maintain ingredient and supply inventories. Price the cost of media and chemical solutions. Maintain daily log and record of distributed items.
Consult with faculty/instructors as needed on issues related to media and chemical solution preparation.
Performs other duties as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software and email utility with ability to learn specialized software.
Demonstrated math skills and knowledge of metric system.
Attention to detail and ability to measure media and chemical solutions precisely.
Ability to complete required safety training programs.
Ability to operate misc. equipment such as: balance, scales, graduated cylinders, volumetric flask, shaker, mortar and pestle, autoclave, microwave, hotplate, stirrer, dishwasher, drying machines; familiar with constant temperature and cold rooms.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education: High school diploma or GED

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Sitting, standing, walking, squatting/kneeling, climbing, balancing, reaching, grasping, pushing/pulling, twisting/bending, lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs multiple times per shift, fingering, talking, hearing, and seeing.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Spends most time indoors with possible exposure to extreme heat when working with dish washing equipment. Possible exposure to distraction/uncomfortable noise levels. Risk of bodily injury from mechanical parts, electricity, etc. Possible exposure to fumes, odors, etc. that may affect respiration and skin.
