JOB TITLE AND LEVEL: Refrigeration Mechanic / SM46

JOB PURPOSE

Installs, maintains, and repairs refrigeration equipment, central air systems, and various HVAC systems.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Installs, troubleshoots, repairs, and replaces chillers, central air systems, window air conditioners, chillers, and refrigeration equipment. Adjusts or replaces worn or defective mechanisms and parts and reassembles repaired systems.

Adjusts valves according to specifications and charges system with proper type of refrigerant by pumping the specified gas or fluid into the system.

Brazes or solders parts to repair defective joints and leaks.

Rods out/cleans heat exchangers/tube bundles.

Cuts, bends, threads, and connects pipe to functional components and water, power, or refrigeration system.

Dismantles malfunctioning systems and test components, using electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic testing equipment.

Drills holes and installs mounting brackets and hangers into floor and walls of building.

Fabricates and assembles structural and functional components of refrigeration system, using hand tools, power tools, and welding equipment.

Installs expansion and control valves, using acetylene torches and wrenches.

Installs wiring to connect components to an electric power source.

Works as a team with heat mechanics in maintaining, servicing, and repairing HVAC equipment and boiler equipment including water treatment.

Services, repairs, and rebuilds pumps and compressors.

Performs other general building maintenance as assigned.

Performs some other cross-functional electrical work.

Drives vehicle as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Ability to operate electronic leak detection equipment, recovery machine, and vacuum pump.

Ability to use meters, capacitor analyzer, vacuum gauge, sawsall, Hilti drill, acetylene torch set, refrigeration gauges, and basic hand tools.

Ability to use basic hand tools, torch/solder, meters (OHM, volt, gas pressure), and electric hand tools.

Ability to read schematics and blueprints.

Ability to serve on rotating call out/standby lists; resulting in mandatory overtime.

Ability to work in safe and efficient manner.

Ability to operate computer.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:  High school diploma or GED. 

Experience:  Certificate in relevant DOL apprenticed trade OR five (5) years verifiable journey level experience.

Licenses:  Valid driver’s license with ability to be insured by Indiana University.  May be required to acquire and maintain asbestos worker or supervisor certifications or other OSHA required certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Sitting, standing, walking, driving, climbing ladders, squatting/kneeling, reaching, grasping, pushing/pulling, twisting/bending, lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs and 75 lbs occasionally multiple times per shift, fingering, talking, hearing, and seeing.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Spends time both indoors and outdoors with possible exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures for one hour plus. Possible exposure to distracting/uncomfortable noise levels. Risk of bodily injury from mechanical parts, electricity, etc. Possible exposure to fumes, odors, etc. that may affect respiration and skin.
