JOB PURPOSE
Installs, repairs, and maintains pipes, fittings, and fixtures of water and drainage systems, according to specifications and plumbing codes.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assembles pipe sections, tubing and fittings, using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, plastic solvent, caulking, or soldering, brazing and welding equipment.
Cuts openings in structures to accommodate pipes and pipe fittings, using hand and power tools.
Fills pipes or plumbing fixtures with water or air and observes pressure gauges to detect and locate leaks.
Hangs steel supports from ceiling joists to hold pipes in place.
Installs pipe assemblies, fittings, valves, pumps, appliances such as dishwashers, garbage disposals, and water heaters, and fixtures such as sinks and toilets, using hand and power tools.
Measures, cuts, threads, and bends pipe to required angle, using hand and power tools or machines such as pipe cutters, pipe-threading machines, and pipe-bending machines.
Repairs and maintains plumbing, replacing water filters and defective valves and washers, replacing or mending broken pipes, and opening clogged drains.
Performs other general building maintenance as assigned.
Drives vehicle as needed.
May perform limited abatement work on an as needed basis.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ability to use basic hand tools, multipurpose electrical meters, truetest smoke detector, sensitivity detector, rotary hammer, sewer machine, thawing machine, drill, reciprocating saw, band saw, torpedo level, acetylene torch, tubing cutters, flaring tools, roll groover, and threading machine.
Ability to use a computer.
Ability to work in safe and efficient manner.
Ability to read blueprints.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: High school diploma or GED.
Experience: Certificate in relevant DOL apprenticed trade OR five years verifiable journey level experience (may require material specific abatement certification).
Licenses: Valid driver’s license with ability to be insured by Indiana University. May be required to acquire and maintain asbestos worker or supervisor certification or other OSHA required certifications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Sitting, standing, walking, driving, climbing/ladders, squatting/kneeling, reaching, grasping, pushing/pulling, twisting/bending, lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs multiple times per shift, fingering, talking, hearing, and seeing.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Spends most time indoors with possible exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures for one hour plus. Possible exposure to distracting/uncomfortable noise levels. Risk of bodily injury from mechanical parts, electricity, etc. Possible exposure to fumes, odors, etc. that may affect respiration and skin.
