JOB PURPOSE
Construct, maintain, and repair of variety of masonry structures. May specialize in plastering, tile setting, tuck pointing, or in the pouring and finishing of concrete.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Studies blueprints, drawings, plans or sketches to construct, maintain, and repair a variety of masonry structures such as walls, steps, walkways, concrete pads, floors, curbs, exterior and interior surfaces/coatings.
Shoots grade and lays out site for pouring of footings and foundations. Constructs forms, supports, and bracing systems.
Mixes cement, sand, aggregate, additives, and water to produce concrete, grout, mortar or slurry using hoe, trowel, shovel, or power mixing equipment.
Spreads, levels, and smoothes concrete using rake, shovel, hand or power trowel, hand or power screed, and float.
Molds expansion joints and edges using edging tools, jointers, and straight edge.
Mixes and/or applies surface coatings such as sealer, curing and hardening agents, masonry stains and colorings.
Lays and binds building materials such as brick, ceramic tile, concrete block, cinder block, glass block, and terra-cotta block with mortar and other substances.
Breaks or cuts bricks, blocks, rough and irregular stone to size using trowel edge, hammer, and chisel or power saw.
Calculates angles and courses and determines vertical and horizontal alignment of courses.
Determines and implements the best layout to achieve a desired pattern.
Repairs and finishes mortar joints between stones, bricks, or blocks of masonry wall. Removes mortar to specified depth using raker, hammer and chisel, power saw, and compressed air.
May use mortar bag to force mortar into joints.
Cleans and prepares surfaces. Mixes plaster, stucco, and other compounds to desired consistency and applies to walls, ceilings, or partitions of buildings using trowels, brushes, or spray guns.
Caulk windows, doors, or cracks in wall with calking gun.
Performs other general building maintenance as assigned.
Drives vehicle as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures.
Ability to determine the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
Ability to work in safe and efficient manner.
Ability to operate computer.
Ability to operate/use hand tools and power tools relevant to general masonry work and also tools related to a masonry specialty area: concrete saw, grinder, tile saw, jackhammer, drills, reciprocating saw, air chisel, power mixing equipment, transit, float, trowel, screed board, basic carpentry hand and power tools.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: High school diploma or GED.
Experience: Certificate in relevant DOL apprenticed trade OR five years verifiable journey level experience in the field.
Licenses: Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured by Indiana University. May be required to acquire and maintain asbestos worker or supervisor certification or other OSHA required certifications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Sitting, standing, walking, driving, climbing/ladders, squatting/kneeling, reaching, grasping, pushing/pulling, twisting/bending, lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs multiple times per shift, fingering, talking, hearing, and seeing.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Equal amounts of time spent indoors and outdoors, possible exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures for one hour plus. Possible exposure to distracting/uncomfortable noise levels and vibration of body or extremities. Risk of bodily injury from mechanical parts, electricity, etc. Possible exposure to fumes, odors, etc. that may affect respiration and skin.
