JOB PURPOSE:
Identifies, removes, packages, transports, and disposes of various hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead-based paint, and mold in buildings and building systems (electrical, heating, plumbing, etc.).
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Uses hand and power tools to remove a variety of hazardous materials from pipe fittings, floor tile, walls, ceilings and other various structural/building components.
Builds and removes enclosures. Erects scaffolding in safe manner according to site conditions.
Performs inspection work such as: visually inspects area, takes samples of materials, documents and seals samples, and provides to management for submission to State.
Performs other general building maintenance as assigned.
Drives vehicle as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of methods, tools and equipment involved in the removal of a variety of hazardous materials in building systems.
Knowledge of applicable building codes, regulations or ordinances.
Ability to work in safe and efficient manner.
Ability to operate negative air machine, tile lift machine, sweepers, encap sprayers, glove bags, spud bar, and related tools and equipment.
Ability to wear cumbersome personal protective gear for extended periods while performing strenuous abatement tasks.
Ability to use a computer.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education: High school diploma or GED
Experience: General construction or maintenance experience preferred
Certification/Licenses: Ability to obtain Asbestos Building Inspector license and Asbestos Abatement Supervisor license within thirty days of employment; may be required to acquire and maintain other OSHA required certifications; valid driver’s license with ability to be insured by Indiana University.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Sitting, standing, walking, driving, climbing ladders, squatting/kneeling, reaching, grasping, pushing/pulling, twisting/bending, lifting/carrying over 50 lbs. multiple times per shift, fingering, talking, hearing, and seeing.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Equal amount of time spent indoors and outdoors with possible exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures for one hour plus. Possible exposure to distracting/uncomfortable noise levels and vibration of body or extremities. Risk of bodily injury from mechanical parts, electricity, etc. Possible exposure to fumes, odors, contaminants and known carcinogens that may affect respiration and skin.
