JOB PURPOSE:
Applies chemicals and treatments to turf grasses and ornamental plants. Maintains records of applications.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists in the inspection of turfgrass areas and ornamental plants for pests, diseases, insects, weeds and other problems.
Determines application techniques and solutions; mixes chemicals consistent with product labeling.
Applies pesticides, fertilizers and other chemical treatments in liquid or granular form.
Provides instruction and safety training for application helpers.
Performs routine safety inspections on application equipment and reports any problems or failures to mechanic.
Maintains application storage and mixing areas in compliance with county, state and federal regulations.
Maintains records and compiles reports of application usage.
Performs other general grounds keeping and building maintenance duties as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of tools, equipment, techniques, materials, and methods related to grounds maintenance and turfgrass management.
Ability read and interpret directions from chemical product labeling.
Ability to apply chemicals and treatments in a manner consistent with regulatory requirements.
Ability to maintain accurate records.
Ability to operate grounds keeping equipment such as: riding and push mower, power edger, weed whip, blower, sprayer, tractor, and basic hand tools.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education: High school diploma or GED
Experience: Two years of grounds maintenance experience.
Certifications/Licenses: Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured by Indiana University. Ability to acquire and maintain valid Indiana Pesticide Applicators license 3B within six months of employment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Sitting, standing, walking, climbing/ladders, squatting/kneeling, reaching, grasping, pushing/pulling, twisting/bending, lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs multiple times per shift, fingering, talking hearing, and seeing.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Spends most time outdoors, frequent exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures for one hour plus. Possible exposure to distraction/uncomfortable noise levels and vibration of body or extremities. Risk of bodily injury from mechanical parts, electricity, etc. Possible exposure to fumes, odors, etc. that may affect respiration and skin.
