Definitions
A job is a collection of positions that have similar major duties and responsibilities.
A position is a specific set of duties and responsibilities assigned to and performed by an individual employee.
A job specification provides a summary of the types of duties and responsibilities that are required of the numerous positions that are within a given job. It also includes the minimum knowledge, skills, abilities, education and experience needed to perform the duties of the positions that are found in the job.
A position description provides a detailed description of the specific duties, responsibilities and required knowledge, skills, abilities, education and experience of a particular position.

The review of Service Jobs university-wide consists of five phases:
- Identify Service Jobs and develop Job Specifications
- Market Analysis
- Create or update position description using Job Specification
- Develop classification and wage structures based on market analysis
- Classify positions into Jobs

Job Specifications
A Working Committee made up of management and human resource representatives from all of the campuses are reviewing the Service Jobs university-wide. They are working with University Human Resources to develop Job Specifications that capture a general description of the overall duties and responsibilities management has assigned to the jobs and the minimum education and experience requirements needed. Below are the current Job Specifications that have been completed:
Service Staff should speak to their Supervisor or Human Resources Representative if they have questions or comments about the Job Specification for the job that represents their position.
Market Analysis
Indiana University hired a third party consultant, Buck Consultants, to provide an analysis of relevant wage information for Service jobs across all IU campuses. The report from Buck Consultants will be posted to the web upon completion of the market analysis which is expected to be completed in late Fall.
