JOB TITLE: Sergeant

JOB PURPOSE
Oversee shift operations and supervise Police Officers. Acts in capacity of senior departmental officer when higher level officers are absent.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Act as command officer in charge of shift operations. Issue work assignments and supervise work activities of all assigned personnel. Complete and approve work schedules to ensure proper shift coverage.
Respond to officers’ calls for assistance and assume scene command of critical incidents. Control and assess situations, identify appropriate actions to preserve crime scenes, compile critical information and coordinate activities with other jurisdictions.
Act as departmental resource for law enforcement operations and university policy-procedure to internal and external constituents. Communicate policy and procedure changes, implications of new or amended laws, and new techniques of law enforcement work to operations personnel.
Review and evaluate current law enforcement practices against campus needs and make recommendations regarding changes to improve operational effectiveness.
Train staff on proper law enforcement work procedures. Monitor and evaluate job performance of assigned personnel. Investigate and resolve personnel problems and report to management.
Maintain shift reports and compile information to provide to on-coming shift officers. Ensure documentation related to investigations and shift reports are accurate and complete.
Patrol campus and perform Police Officer duties as needed. Investigate complaints and accidents, document information, maintain records, collect evidence, question individuals, draft reports and enter reports in the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Records Management System (RMS).
Prepare and serve civil processes. Participate in court proceedings, administrative hearings and/or quasi-judicial trials.
Administer aid as a first responder.
Drive vehicle with due regard for existing conditions and potentially dangerous situations.
Perform non-law enforcement duties specific to campus needs.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ability to take control of situation and perform duties effectively and in a professional manner during situations that may rapidly evolve and range from friendliness and persuasion to firmness and deadly force.
Ability to communicate effectively to staff through written and verbal instructions.
Ability to read, write and speak English fluently.
Advanced knowledge of the use and care of firearms, communications equipment, motor vehicles, computer hardware and software, photographic equipment, breath and chemical test equipment, audio-visual equipment, and all other associated law enforcement equipment.
Working knowledge of computers and word processing, email, and database software systems.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree and 3 years law enforcement experience.
OR- High school diploma/GED and 6 years law enforcement experience.
- Strongly prefer prior Indiana University Police Department experience.
- Demonstrated leadership skills required. Prior supervisory experience preferred.
Required Licenses & Certifications
- Must be Indiana Law Enforcement Academy Certified.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured by Indiana University.
- Complete and maintain all required annual law enforcement training and certifications as prescribed by Indiana State Law and the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board (ILETB).
- Completion of ILETB Certified Instructor training preferred.
- Current and continued certification in department required courses such as CPR, AED, Blood Borne Pathogens, IDACS, etc.
- Current firearms qualification.
- Demonstrated competency in the performance of specialized duties wherein specialized training has been provided and completed.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Standing, walking, driving, climbing over obstacles, squatting/kneeling, reaching, grasping, pushing/pulling, twisting/bending, lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs multiple times per shift, fingering, talking, hearing, and seeing. Must maintain physical and mental readiness to react to sudden/dramatic changes in working conditions. Must make discriminations and decisions concerning subtle cues of impending danger or inconsistencies in witnesses’ or suspects’ testimonies, etc.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Time spent both indoors in office and outdoors working on foot or in a vehicle with possible exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures for reasonable amounts of time. Physical and mental demands may change dramatically within a few seconds and tax the maximum of human endurance. Will have daily contact with potentially dangerous people, animals, weapons and equipment.
