Computer Usage
AFSCME 6.11

A. Use of public computers

  1. Employees may utilize University computers that are intended for public use, excluding campus computer clusters, during the employee's own time including prior to and following the employee's assigned work shift, as well as during any unpaid meal period.

  2. Employees are not permitted to utilize the public computers during any paid working time including break periods.

B. Computers in break rooms

  1. On a trial basis in Residential Programs and Services, Indiana Memorial Union, and the Service Building in the Physical Plant, computers will be placed in break rooms for SM staff to use subject to all of the conditions contained in paragraph A. of this policy.

C. Authorized use of computers for University business

  1. The university is increasingly moving to an environment in which its business with its employees is computer based.

  2. With supervisory approval, an employee may access the university's electronic systems during work hours (including but not limited to paid breaks) in order to conduct university related business using computer equipment designated by their department.

  3. The university will provide reasonable access to and approriate training in the use of these electronic systems before requiring their use to conduct university business.

  4. Employees shall suffer no loss of pay, benefits or discipline for problems created by verifiable malfunctions in the university's electronic systems without just cause as provided in the Corrective Action policy.

D. AFSCME Local 832 email access

  1. AFSCME Local 832 is required to have email access through Indiana University to facilitate electronic communications between IU and AFSCME. The university will provide an email account to AFSCME Local 832 for this purpose. 

    1. The AFSCME President, Secretary, or designee as identified to management will be allowed access to a computer during work hours to check on and respond to IU management emails.
