Adverse Weather Conditions
AFSCME 5.7
Revised July 1, 2010
A. Missed work due to extreme travel hazards
-
It is not expected that the university will close, although there will be times because of weather when certain staff members cannot travel to work or may need to leave early. Because it is the policy of the university to operate at all times, employees are expected to report for duty unless notified otherwise.
-
If adverse weather conditions create extreme travel hazard for a staff member traveling to or from the workplace:
-
The person should make every effort to notify the departmental supervisor, and
-
The department may authorize use of accrued vacation, previously accrued compensatory time, accrued income protection time as provided under "emergency" provisions, or the work may be made up on an hour-for-hour basis during the same week so that the employee will not suffer loss of pay.
-
Employees may request absence without pay, with benefits, in lieu of charging the absence against items listed above.
-
-
If adverse weather conditions are widespread and extremely severe, the president on the Bloomington campus and the chancellors of other campuses may determine that a campus should be closed and announce by means of local radio stations that staff members shall not report to work. Whenever a campus is closed, the president's office is to be notified promptly.
- Employees may also call the university's emergency information number at 1-877-482-5486 or visit the Campus Emergency Site.
- Management will use its best efforts to designate and communicate the closing and reopening times.
- Under such circumstances, pay for staff members will be continued without charge to allowances or make-up of time.
- Emergency hourly and appointed employees only, who are required
to work, will be allowed time and one-half additional time off,
or pay, as determined by the department head.
- It is the responsibility of supervisors to notify employees in advance which jobs may be subject to emergency requirements.
-
When a campus is closed, an absence charged to weather should be coded on the Payroll Voucher with appropriate notation in comment section.
