Probationary Period
AFSCME 2.10

Revised July 1, 2004

A. Probation period
  1. The purpose of the University Probation Period is to provide assurance that the person employed can satisfactorily fulfill the demands of the position. All employees, excluding police officers, at the time of their appointment to the University shall serve a minimum probationary period of four months. For individuals hired or who transferred into a police officer position on or after July 1, 1996, the probationary period is one year. Police Officers who transferred or were promoted from another university appointed position and who do not successfully complete the police officer probationary period shall be placed on the Bloomington campus reduction in force list.

  2. If it is decided at any time during the University Probationary Period not to continue the new staff member's employment, the Human Resources Department should be contacted to determine the possibility of a transfer to other work better suited to the individual before separation from employment is executed.

  3. At the end of the University Probationary Period, supervision shall inform all regular staff employees as to whether the probationary period has been satisfactorily completed or will be extended beyond the four-month, probationary period. In such cases, the period may be extended no more than an additional two months for a total of a six-month probation period. For police officers, the maximum total is 14 months.

  4. During the probationary status of a staff employee, no matter concerning the discipline, layoff or termination of such employee shall be subject to the Grievance Procedure (7/02).

  5. An employee in probation status shall have no seniority until the total probationary period is completed. Upon the completion of the probationary period, seniority is acquired as provided for in the seniority policy.

  6. Promotions and transfers do not require the serving of another probationary period.

  7. The Probation Period is not to be a part of any disciplinary procedure. Therefore, once the Probation Period has been satisfactorily completed, an employee may not be placed on probation again.
