2.9 New Employee Evaluation Period

This policy applies to Service Maintenance Employees at South Bend.

A. New employee evaluation

  1. The purpose of the University new employee evaluation is to provide assurance that the person employed can satisfactorily fulfill the demands of the position. All employees, except police officers, who are hired on or after July 1, 1997, at the time of their appointment to an appointed position, shall serve a minimum probationary period of four months .
    1. Anyone who is hired or who transfers to a police officer position on or after July 1, 1997, shall serve a one-year evaluation period.
    2. A police officer that, at the time of hire, possesses current Indiana State Police Officer certification will serve an eight-month new employee evaluation period.
  2. If it is decided at any time during the University new employee evaluation period not to continue the new employee's employment, the campus human resources office should be contacted to determine the possibility of a transfer to other work better suited to the individual before separation from employment is executed.
  3. At the end of the University new employee evaluation period, supervision shall inform the employee as to whether the new employee evaluation period has been satisfactorily completed or will be extended beyond the four-month or eight-month period.
  4. During the new employee evaluation status of a staff employee, no matter concerning the discipline, layoff or termination of such employee shall be subject to the Grievance Procedure.
  5. An employee in new employee evaluation status shall have no seniority until the total new employee evaluation period is completed. Upon the completion of the new employee evaluation period, seniority is acquired as provided for in the seniority policy.
  6. The new employee evaluation period is not to be the part of any disciplinary procedure. Therefore, once the new employee evaluation period has been satisfactorily completed, an employee may not be placed on new employee evaluation period again.
