Policies for Hourly Employees

Reduction in Force
Hourly 8.2

Effective January 1, 2002

This policy applies to all Hourly employees.

A. Introduction

A reduction in force (RIF) is a curtailment of the workforce ordered by university administration. A reduction may arise for reasons of, but not limited to, the following: budget, lack of work, reorganization, or reduction of positions beyond the employee's control.

B. Impact on Hourly employees

  1. All temporary and/or Hourly employees are laid off first. Positions normally held by student Hourly employees may be excluded.

  2. If staffing needs of a department prohibit the elimination of all temporary and/or Hourly positions, Staff employees designated for layoff will receive first preference for such assignments. Hourly employees may be given consideration for such assignments next.

  3. Hourly employees are not placed on a layoff list and are not covered by the recall provisions of the university's Reduction in Force policy for Staff employees.
