Clinical Postdoctoral Fellows

On this page: Eligibility | Medical | Enrollment | Dental | Vision | Questions?

Eligibility

Medical and Dental coverage is available to Clinical Postdoctoral Fellows through Aetna. The plan premiums are provided by the department in which each Fellow is employed.

Enrollment

Newly appointed Fellows will receive an email instructing them to enroll in their benefits online. Benefit elections must be completed within thirty days of the appointment date.  Documentation, such as a marriage license or birth certificate, must be provided for each enrolled dependent.  An email with instructions for providing this documentation will be sent upon enrollment.

Returning Fellows will receive a notification email instructing them to elect benefits online during Open Enrollment each June for a July 1st effective date.

Changes to health coverage must be made during open enrollment or within thirty days of an IRS qualified change in status, such as a marriage or birth of a child. Human Resources must be notified within thirty days of such an event in order to change benefit elections.

Medical Plan

The plan uses Aetna’s Preferred Provider Organization, or PPO, network.  This plan lets members visit any doctor or hospital in Aetna’s preferred network without naming a primary care doctor. The Aetna network is a nationwide network and includes international coverage.  The plan year begins on July 1st and ends on June 30th each year, with coverage starting on the Fellow’s appointment date.  Coverage ends on the Fellow’s appointment end date.

Dental

Dental insurance can be elected and dependents can be enrolled. The Dental Brochure can be found online at hr.iu.edu/pubs/books/IUSM+IUSD-Dental-201112.pdf.

Vision

There is no vision plan. However, Aetna does provide coverage for one annual preventive eye exam, and there is a Vision Wear Discount Program that comes with enrollment in the Medical plan.
