IU Tobacco-free Program
As an incentive for the non-use of tobacco and to promote a healthy life, the University provides the IU Tobacco-free Program which includes two features.
- Tobacco cessation assistance is fully paid by the University. This assistance covers the cost of employee and spouse/domestic partner participation in Alere Wellbeing's Quit for Life™ program when enrolled in an IU-sponsored medical plan.
- $25 per month for an employee or spouse ($50 for both) who do not use tobacco will be deducted from the employee's contribution to the medical plan. The employee must sign a Tobacco-free Affidavit each year. Employees who are not tobacco-free at the time of signing the affidavit are eligible for this reduction after verification to the University stating they have completed the Quit for Life program.

Policies that apply to all Indiana University Staff and Hourly Employees
Every Indiana University employee is expected to perform his or her duties in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures. Below is a list of important federal and state laws and IU policies with which each employee should be familiar.
- Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) – This federal law helps balance family and work needs by allowing up to 12 weeks of leave in a 12-month period for eligible employees.
- Affirmative Action Policy – IU prohibits discrimination and harassment based on arbitrary considerations of such characteristics as age, color, disability, ethnicity, gender, marital status, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation, and veteran status.
- Substance-free Workplace – IU prohibits use of controlled substances and alcohol (unless authorized for specific events) on university premises or while conducting university business off university premises.
- Conflicts of Interest – IU employees are required to disclose any potential Conflicts of Interest and avoid conflicts which involve using one's position to influence university operations for personal financial benefits.
- Conflicts of Commitment – IU employees are are prohibited from having conflicts where external activities interfere with fulfilling university responsibilities or result in unauthorized use of university resources.
- Whistleblower Policy – This policy protects the IU employee who makes a good faith disclosure of suspected wrongful conduct. Those who have knowledge of specific acts that are reasonably believed to violate the law or university policy must disclose those acts to an appropriate IU official.
- Fiscal Misconduct/Ghost Employment – Indiana law makes it a criminal and civil law offense for IU to pay an employee when that employee is not performing duties related to IU's operation. No employee is to receive salary or wages for work not performed in the exercise of duties for IU. It is also unlawful for a supervisor to—approve and an employee to accept—salary or wages in this situation.
- Tobacco-free IU – In February 2007, the Trustees mandated that smoking and the sale of tobacco products would be prohibited on all university property. Since January 1, 2008, each campus has had an individually tailored policy that provides for a smoke- or tobacco- free campus.
