IU HDHP PPO & Health Savings Account (HSA)
Use of Debit Card
Participants in the IU HDHP PPO & Health Savings Account (HSA) have a comprehensive medical plan and the added advantage of a personal savings account. Both the University and the employee make contributions to the HSA account that can be used for IRS-qualified medical expenses. Each employee receives a Chase debit card after initial enrollment, and a second card can be requested for a family member. The University covers the cost of two cards and the monthly bank fee.
Employees can use the debit card to withdraw HSA funds—up to the amount in the account—to pay a provider at the time of service or when a bill is received. Employees who pay for services with cash or a personal check can withdraw funds from an ATM to cover the expenses. If requested by the IRS, the employee must be able to show that withdrawals from the HSA account were exclusively for medical expenses incurred after the date of enrollment in the health plan.
HDHP & HSA participants who use the IU Tax Saver Benefit (TSB) plan, should note: Both the TSB and HRA plans are administered by Nyhart and funds can be accessed using a single red TSB debit card issued for these accounts by UMB Bank.

Clarian Name Change
Clarian Health recently changed its name to Indiana University Health (also seen as IU Health). This change is to better identify Clarian's nationally recognized healthcare services, as well as to reinforce its partnership with Indiana University and one of the nation's largest medical schools—Indiana University School of Medicine. The name change does not impact the existing structure of the Clarian organization which consists of Indiana University Hospital, Riley Hospital for Children, Methodist Hospital, and other Clarian affiliates throughout the state, such as Bloomington Hospital.
- The name of the Clarian Quality Partners (CQP) Exclusive Provider Medical Plan has changed to IU Health Quality Partners Exclusive Provider Medical Plan (IUHQP). The names of associated entities such as Clarian Pharmacies will also change to reflect the new name.
- This name change does not affect the benefits provided under the CQP Exclusive Provider medical plan, nor the physicians and hospitals that make up the provider network. Members will continue to use the same network providers and receive the same benefit coverages as before the name change.
Employees have already begun to see these name changes on Web pages, publications, and employee communications over the last several months. Visit Indiana University Health at iuhealth.org for updates.
Life Insurance Enhancements and Reminders
Benefit Enhancement
Basic Life Insurance and Supplemental Life Insurance plans were enhanced to provide employees with more life insurance coverage at a later age. Before, at age 65, Basic Life was reduced from 2 times to 1.3 times annual base salary and Supplemental Life was reduced to 65 percent of the amount of insurance elected.
- Beginning April 1, the age at which life insurance is reduced will be extended to age 70.
Beneficiary Reminder
To stay current with changing life circumstances, it is important for employees to periodically check their designated beneficiaries on group insurance, as well as retirement plans.
- Employees can now designate different beneficiaries for Basic Life and Supplemental Life plans at the Benefits Self Service area of OneStart.
Supplemental Life Insurance Reminder
The University's Supplemental Life Insurance plan is not tied to the annual Open Enrollment period.
- Eligible full-time employees may enroll within thirty days of their initial date of hire by simply completing a Supplemental Life Insurance enrollment form. However, to enroll or increase Supplemental coverage after these initial thirty days a Medical History Statement form must also be completed.
- The two-step process to enroll and all necessary forms are at the Benefits Change Connection hr.iu.edu/bcc/.
- Plan information is available at hr.iu.edu/benefits/supplemental.html.
