New Online Application (OLA) for Staff Positions
The University is moving to a centralized employment system that simplifies the process of applying for job openings and offers a powerful job search capability. The system also provides: more efficient use of resources, nearly 24/7 access for applicants, and opportunities for an expanded, diverse applicant pool.
Applicants will be able to:
- Easily create and maintain a user account.
- Upload a default resume that can be used when applying to similar jobs (and upload a custom resume/cover letter for each application should the applicant wish to do that).
- Search across campuses, across job categories, or various combinations, in addition to searching for a specific job by its job number.
- View the status of jobs for which they have applied and the test scores for standard MS Office tests they have taken.
Campus Human Resources offices and departmental supervisors will be able to:
- Assign “roles” in the system to determine which screens the hiring officials can see, as well as what data is visible and updateable on the screens.
- The primary roles are: hiring committee member, hiring committee lead, departmental contact, and campus Human Resources staff.
- A limited number of secondary roles exist such as system administrator and affirmative action.
OLA is currently in use at the Southeast campus. Northwest, South Bend, and Kokomo campuses are scheduled for May implementation followed by Bloomington, IUPUI, and East in June to July 2009.

AIG Valic and AUL
No Longer Approved for IU TDA Plan
Due to new regulatory compliance requirements and the need to be as efficient as possible in administering Indiana University retirement plans, AIG Valic and AUL will no longer be approved investment companies for the IU Tax Deferred Annuity Plan (TDA Plan) effective June 1, 2009. Fidelity and TIAA-CREF will remain the approved investment companies for all participants in the IU TDA Plan.
Participants who are actively contributing to the IU TDA Plan, and investing those contributions with AIG Valic or AUL, have already received several communications about this change and how to choose a new investment company and funds before the June 1, 2009 deadline.
Participants who are not actively contributing to the IU TDA Plan, but do have an IU TDA Plan account invested with AIG Valic or AUL, may leave their account balance with AIG Valic or AUL, or transfer their account balance to TIAA-CREF and/or Fidelity. Funds invested with AIG Valic or AUL are not available for new loans as of March 4, 2009. Loans may only be granted from funds invested with Fidelity or TIAA-CREF.
For questions or assistance, please contact a campus Human Resources office.

Tobacco-free Policy
In February 2007, the Trustees mandated that smoking and the sale of tobacco products would be prohibited on all University property. By January 1, 2008, each IU campus developed and implemented an individually tailored policy that provides for a smoke- or tobacco-free campus. Enforcement of the policy depends upon the cooperation of all faculty, staff, and students to respect the right of their fellow members of the University community to breathe smoke-free air.
The tobacco-free or smoke-free policy at each campus covers students, faculty, staff, and visitors to campus and includes how to refer a violation of the policy. The Web site below contains links to campus-specific tobacco policies and information about low- or no-cost tobacco cessation resources and programs.
Be a Wise Healthcare Consumer
As healthcare costs continue to escalate, it becomes even more important to be a prudent consumer of medical services. Laboratory testing is an area where employees can see meaningful savings. Laboratory services can be obtained in various locations—physicians’ offices, independent laboratories, and hospital outpatient facilities—and costs vary significantly between these types of providers.
Employees should inquire about and compare lab costs before having these services performed. Below are some examples of the cost differences between providers.
Complete Blood Count |
Lipids (Cholesterol) |
Thyroid Function |
|
| Independent laboratory | $ 7.70 |
$13.10 |
$ 16.43 |
| Outpatient hospital | $55.25 |
$88.40 |
$113.90 |
Anthem has contracted with a network of laboratories that provide cost-effective service. A list of network laboratories by area can be obtained from the Anthem web page or by calling Anthem customer service at 800-345-2460.
