IU TDA Plan Amendment
Auto Enroll for New Academic and Staff Employees
Effective July 1, 2008, all new full-time employees will be automatically enrolled in the IU Tax Deferred Annuity (TDA) Plan. The default deferral rate will be five percent and the default investment selection will be TIAA-CREF’s Lifecycle Funds®. New employees will be able to opt out of participation or increase or decrease their deferral rate in the IU TDA Plan (1) during new-hire open enrollment or (2) at any time thereafter through Benefits Self Service or a campus Human Resources office.
The goal of this amendment is to encourage and assist employees in saving for retirement years.
While existing employees will not be impacted by this amendment, the university encourages employees to consider participating in the IU TDA Plan and/or the IU Retirement Savings Plan, or to increase their current deferral rate. To do either, employees can visit Benefits Self Service or contact a campus Human Resources office.
To access Benefits Self Service:
- Log in to OneStart.
- Click on the “Services” tab.
- Click on “Benefits Self Service.”

Tobacco Use and Health
Smokers Remain Unaware of the Health Effects of Smoking
Despite efforts to educate the public on the dangers of smoking over the past 40 years, a new national survey indicates knowledge gaps exist in what smokers believe to be true about the risks associated with smoking compared to the actual realities of tobacco-related disease and death. Experts believe that these misperceptions may prevent smokers from trying to quit and successfully using proven smoking cessation treatments.
According to the survey, while many smokers are aware that smoking can lead to serious health problems, including lung cancer, many underestimate the risk of getting the disease from smoking. For example:
-
2 in 3 smokers underestimate the chance of developing lung cancer
-
4 in 10 incorrectly believe that developing lung cancer depends on genes more than anything else
-
1/3 of smokers think that exercise and vitamins can “undo” smoking effects
American Legacy Foundation news release Nov. 13, 2007. National survey conducted by the American Legacy Foundation and GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare, an industry leader in smoking cessation.
Tobacco Cessation Benefit
The university enhanced its medical benefits to cover the cost of a Tobacco Cessation Plan with Free & Clear, Inc. Quit for Life™ cessation program. This benefit is not tied to Open Enrollment. It is available at any time to all full-time Academic and Staff employees and their dependents 18 or older, even if they are not enrolled in an IU-sponsored medical plan. The plan is fully paid by the university.
To join the program or find out more, call 866.QUIT.4.LIFE (866-784-8454) or visit www.freeclear.com/iu.
