COBRA Rights for Dependents
Dependents who lose IU-sponsored health care coverages may be eligible to continue as an individual.
A spouse or child who loses eligibility for coverage under an IU-sponsored health care plan, due to a life event, may be eligible for COBRA continuation coverage. Life events include situations such as divorce or death of a spouse, marriage of a child, and a child reaching the limiting age for coverage or losing student status. When a dependent loses eligibility, COBRA is generally available for up to 36 months. COBRA must be elected within 60 days of the loss of coverage and premiums must be received within 45 days of the election. Contact a campus Human Resources office for important details.
