Military Service and Employee Rights

The Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994 and Veterans Benefits Improvement Act of 2004 provide certain rights and benefits to employees who are called or volunteer for military duty. Three of the most significant rights and benefits provided to employees by the Acts are reemployment rights, retirement benefits, and health benefits.

Any employee who returns to work at Indiana University following a period of military service should immediately contact University Human Resource Services (UHRS). The office will review the employee’s circumstances and determine if he or she is entitled to benefits. To contact UHRS, please e-mail Wayne McClain at .

CSI for Professional Staff Jobs

The Compensation System Initiative (CSI) project is well underway with a number of completed deliverables and expected finalization in early 2006. The purpose of this project is to review Professional Staff jobs with the goal of implementing a fair and rational compensation system across the university. Data received from completed Position Information Questionnaires (PIQs) provided by departments this past summer is now being reviewed and used in determining the structure of jobs. With the assistance of Mercer Human Resources Consulting and the university-wide steering committee, the project’s next steps are to (1) update market data and establish a new salary structure, (2) evaluate jobs and assign them to a salary structure, and then (3) assign positions to broad-based jobs. The revised compensation system will be communicated in early 2006. Visit www.indiana.edu/~uhrs/csi/index.html for detailed information about this project.

Participate in an IU-Sponsored Supplemental Retirement Plan

IU’s Supplemental Retirement Plan Campaign is still in progress and it’s not too late to enroll. Whether retirement is 30 years away or only a few years away, contributing even small amounts to an IU-sponsored supplemental retirement plan can help increase an employee’s retirement savings.

Indiana University offers two supplemental retirement plans, each with pre-tax contributions to help employees save more money for retirement years. Contact a campus office and/or visit www.indiana.edu/~uhrs/ and click on the campaign logo for more information.

How You Can Increase Your Retirement Savings
Michael buys a soft drink from a fast food restaurant once a day for a total of $50 each month. If he contributed this same amount to a supplemental retirement plan, he could potentially earn the following:

After 5 years
10 years
15 years
20 years
25 years

$   3,698
$   9,208
$17,417
$29,647
$47,868
Disclaimer: This hypothetical example is based on monthly contributions of $50 made to a supplemental retirement plan and a hypothetical 8% annual rate or return compounded monthly.
