IU Fee Courtesy Plan Benefit Provisions Reconfigured

Effective with fall 2004 classes, the IU Fee Courtesy Plan will include the reconfiguration of some application processes and benefit provisions.

Application process reconfiguration. Beginning with fall 2004, there will be a new Fee Courtesy plan enrollment form. Enrollment using the new form will be required each academic year. The new form and annual enrollment will be a change for fee courtesy recipients at some campuses. The form for fall 2004 through summer 2005 enrollment is available on the University Human Resource Services Web site. As with other IU benefit plans, documentation of a spouse or dependent child’s relationship will be required upon initial enrollment in benefit plans, and verification of eligibility may be required periodically.

Benefit provision reconfiguration. There is no change in the benefit for dependent children. The benefit provisions for spouses/domestic partners and employees will be 100 percent of covered tuition up to a dollar limit per semester. This reconfiguration is to accommodate the administration of IU Fee Courtesy benefits within the constraints of the new Student Information System (SIS). For the vast majority of benefit recipients, this change will equal a comparable benefit value; a few benefit recipients will have an improved benefit value.

Summary of IU Fee Courtesy Plan benefits effective fall 2004:

  • Dependent child–no change in benefits (50 percent of Indiana resident undergraduate rate, up to a maximum of 140 credit hours).
  • Spouse/Domestic Partner–covered tuition paid at 100 percent up to a dollar limit* per semester; dollar limit based on 50 percent of three credit/audit hours at the Indiana resident undergraduate rate.
  • Employee–covered tuition paid at 100 percent up to a dollar limit* per semester; based on 100 percent of three credit/audit hours and 50 percent for another three credit/audit hours, at the Indiana resident
undergraduate, graduate, or professional rate, as appropriate to the employee’s degree program.

In the unusual event that an employee currently enrolled in a more expensive graduate program, such as the Business Master’s program, were to experience a reduction in IU Fee Courtesy Plan benefits during a two-year transition period, the university will process a manual adjustment to make up any difference.

The university will prepare the specific Fee Courtesy dollar limits for Spouse/Domestic Partner and Employee benefit coverages each year shortly after tuition rates are approved. These amounts for the 2004-2005 academic year, plus additional information are available at www.indiana.edu/~uhrs/benefits.

* Dollar limits will vary based on tuition rates at each campus, and will increase from year to year based on tuition rates approved by the Board of Trustees. As in the past, covered tuition does not include special fees such as those for laboratories, applied music, student teaching, dissertation research fees, facility fees, etc.
