Birth or Adoption of a Child
The birth or adoption of a child will allow you to make changes to your benefit plans outside of Open Enrollment.
To make changes to any of the plans listed immediately below, you will need to
request a Family Status Change through the Employee Center on OneStart and
complete online enrollment of your changes once your request is approved by HR. You must make the change within 30 days.
Note regarding newborn coverage:
- Documentation (birth certificate, hospital birth confirmation, or custody/adoption order) will be required.
- Coverage stops after 31 days unless the newborn is added to the plan.
- Add your child to your IU dental plan.
- Add coverage (HIPAA special enrollment rights)
- Add your child to your IU medical plan.
- Add coverage (HIPAA special enrollment rights)
Personal Accident Insurance plan
- Add or drop coverage.
- Increase or decrease your coverage between employee and family.
Health Care:
- Add or increase election.
Dependent Care:
- Add or increase coverage
(Consistency rule is satisfied if change corresponds with Family Status Change that affects either eligibility for coverage under Plan or eligibility of expenses under applicable IRS regulations.)
You may also want to consider making changes to the plans
listed below. Such changes
do not require completion of a Family Status Change form and
can be done at any time.
Change Beneficiaries on Retirement and Insurance plans
- Change the beneficiaries on your base retirement and life insurance, as well as any other supplemental plans.
- Dependents of full-time academic and staff employees are eligible for the IU Tuition Benefit.
IU Tax Deferred Account (formerly IU Tax Deferred Annuity Plan)
- Begin or stop IU Tax Deferred Account.
- Begin or stop IU Retirement Savings Plan account.
