Apprenticeship ProgramGo to: ⇒ Overview ⇒ Recruitment & Selection ⇒ WorkKeys Summary ⇒ Program Administration ⇒ Contact Information The Indiana University Apprenticeship Program (IUAP) was established in 1978 to develop qualified, skilled craft workers for the IU Bloomington Physical Plant Department. The IUAP offers participants the opportunity to advance their careers through full-time, four-year apprenticeships in the Physical Plant department. At the end of four years, successful apprentices are certified through the Department of Labor, promoted to the journeyperson level and classification in their respective craft and continue as permanent full-time employees of Indiana University. Apprenticeships may be offered in the following crafts: carpenter, electrician, elevator mechanic, heating mechanic, plumber, refrigeration mechanic, and sheet metal mechanic. Once selected for the IUAP, through a formalized recruitment and selection process, participants engage in four years of on-the-job training and craft-specialized classroom instructions. Educational expense is provided by the University, while classroom attendance and study are on the apprentices’ own time. Recruitment & SelectionOpenings for the IU Apprenticeship Program are posted by University Human Resources Services (UHRS) on the Jobs @ IU website: Link to IU Job Search ). Select the job category “Service Maintenance” to filter for apprenticeship openings. Openings are also announced in local newspapers. Anyone who is 18 years of age and has a high school diploma or general education diploma (GED) may apply. The applicant need not be an IU employee. An optional informational meeting for all interested individuals is typically held during the job opening period. In order to increase the possibility of selection for the IU Apprenticeship Program, interested individuals are strongly encouraged to pursue craft-related education and other craft-related training offered by certified providers. When openings exist, the IUAP Information Sheet outlines the application process. Select applicants will be interviewed by the Joint Apprenticeship Committee (JAC). The interview, along with the applicant’s related education, training, prior work experience and WorkKeys Assessment results (see WorkKeys Summary below), will determine the selected candidates for the apprenticeship position openings. Employment is contingent on verification of U.S. citizenship and completion of a successful background check by the University. Interested individuals should contact the Physical Plant Coordinator of Development for more detailed recruitment and selection information. Please see contact information below.
