University of Costa Rica


COSTA RICA

The University of Costa Rica (UCR) is located in San Pedro in the province of San Jose.  It is a comprehensive university with over 39,000 students and is one of the leading universities in Central America.

Dates
This exchange is for one month during the 2013-2014 academic year (July 1, 2013 – June 30, 2014).  First semester for UCR is last week of February through last week of June and the second semester is the first week of August through first week of December.

Program Orientation 
Opportunity for independent research or collaboration with UCR faculty.

Academic Program

  • Full range of academic programs in agricultural sciences, arts & letters, basic sciences, engineering, health sciences and social sciences
  • Main campus in San Pedro
  • 26 research institutes

Housing
Housing is provided in a home stay situation. 

Eligibility
You may apply if you

  • Are a tenure-line faculty member (including librarian) or research scientist/scholar at any IU campus. Non tenure-line faculty members whose evaluation criteria for promotion include research or creative activity are also eligible with an explanation in the letter of support from their dean or chair.
  • Have a clear research agenda that can be accommodated by UCR.
  • Have high Spanish language proficiency, both written and oral.
  • Strongly suggested that applicants have pre-existing contacts with researcher/faculty at UCR.

Financial Support

  • OVPIA provides funds for the cost of round-trip airfare.
  • UCR provides board, lodging with a Costa Rican family, or a stipend sufficient to cover the cost of these items.

Selection Process

  • OVPIA will seek a preliminary recommendation from the University Committee on Latin American Exchanges.
  • A final recommendation from the International Affairs Exchange Review Committee will be required before sending dossiers to partner institutions for final approval.

Proposal Instructions

  • Candidates may apply to use positions in a variety of ways.
  • We invite proposals to conduct research, consult with colleagues, or offer lectures or short courses.
  • Applicants should indicate how their proposals are important to their professional development, the development of a school or departmental affiliation, or the development of the partner institution.
  • Research proposals should include an outline of the project and should specifically identify local resources the candidate would employ.
  • An applicant who proposes to offer lectures or a short course should provide confirmation that his/her topics are of interest to colleagues at the partner institution.
