Digital Signage Project Background

Communicating with faculty, staff, and students has always been important, but as technology continues to advance it becomes even more important to find numerous creative ways to ensure that important messages reach many audiences quickly. While e-mail and text messaging are quick ways to reach people, digital signage is another way to send messages to people we may ordinarily be unable to contact.

Indiana University is now offering the Digital Signage Project -- a system-wide solution that provides you with access to digital signage products and services.  All licensing fees have been paid for by IU Emergency Management, and ongoing maintenance will be handled by IU's Office of the Vice President for Public Affairs and Government Relations. Through the IU Digital Signage Project, IU units can manage communications using digital signage that interfaces with Emergency Management and IU systems and feeds at an affordable price.

During severe weather some of our key audiences may not be near a computer or have a smartphone capable of receiving e-mail or SMS messages. A digital sign is a fast way to post a message that will reach many people simultaneously. Send an emergency notification out to several digital signs with just one click, and you will reach students studying in the union, a large lecture hall of students, or staff eating lunch in a food court.

Digital signs are also a great way to advertise upcoming sporting activities, details on registration, or information about health clinics. For example, touch screens allow your audiences to interact with content that is not possible with a paper product. Advertising a concert or play? Allow users who walk by to click on buttons to hear samples of music or to view scenes from a dress rehearsal. The possibilities are endless, and the success of this project will continue to grow as more and more departments and schools add digital signage to their common areas.
