Why support the Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs?

Diversity enriches the educational experience and brings uncompromised quality to the academy and the global community that it serves

Improving the quality of education at Indiana University creates a heightened challenge to establish new opportunities that promote and embrace the ideas, opinions, beliefs, and perspectives of a global and diverse society. The concept of a diverse Indiana University is an integrated academic, economic, social, and cultural issue for Indiana, the nation, and the world.

Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs (DEMA)

The Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs is the cabinet level office broadly responsible for promoting academic excellence through diversity and inclusion. DEMA is guided by the principle of community and institution collaboration and active engagement of faculty, staff, administrators, students, and alumni across racial, ethnic, and institutional boundaries in advocacy for all groups. DEMA serves as a central collaborator, catalyst, and advocate for initiatives, programs, services, and activities that advance academic and societal engagement within and between Indiana University and its constituent communities on the importance of diversity, equity, and multiculturalism as an economic, social, and cultural imperative in university life, community development, and personal growth.

Dr. Marshall talking with students Thinking back over my time at Indiana University, first as an undergraduate student, then as a professional and graduate student, followed by faculty and administrative appointments, I now marvel at the various paths that brought me to my present position as an IU vice president. It was not that I knew beforehand where I wanted to go in life or how I would get there, but that I used each of my IU experiences as building blocks to guide me to the next path of achievement. It is okay to have plans for your future, but do not be so rigid as to close the doors to new and challenging opportunities. Education can change everything, and IU can be that change.
