Presentations


Beth Gazley, IUB, presented two papers at the annual meeting of the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action – ARNOVA in Atlanta, GA on November 14-17. The first paper, coauthored with Robert Christensen (SPEA PhD ’06) was entitled “Learning from the Nonprofit Sector: Finding Meaning in Capacity”. The second, coauthored with Jeffrey L. Brudney of Cleveland State University, was entitled “Planning to be Prepared: An Empirical Examination of the Role of Voluntary Organizations in Emergency Planning in Local U.S. Governments”.

Kirsten A. Grønbjerg, IUB, presented “Capacity Building: What Grantees Really Need” at the Indiana Grantmakers Alliance Annual Conference, Indianapolis, November 8-9. She was also a Respondent to “Filer Lecture” by Diana Aviv, President, Independent Sector at Center on Philanthropy 20th Anniversary Celebration, Indianapolis, November 5.

Monika Herzig, IUB, with poet Norbert Krapf, released a CD titled “ Imagine – Indiana in Music and Words,” ACME Records. They will be appearing at the following:

Ronald Hites, IUB, presented “Inconvenient Science: Reflections of An Environmental Chemist” at the SPEA Capitol Hill Colloquium on November 27 in Washington, D.C.

Sheila Kennedy, IUPUI, spoke on November 14 at the Shepherd’s Center, North United Methodist Church in Indianapolis about her recent book, God and Country: America in Red and Blue.

Les Lenkowsky, IUB and IUPUI, was a visiting lecturer on November 27-28 at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia. He also led the undergraduate classes in discussions of Andrew Carnegie and Alexis de Tocqueville.

Bill McGregor, IUB, presented a paper, "Some States Have Strategies," at the 30th Annual APPAM Research Conference, November 8-10 in Washington, D.C. He also chaired the panel, “Innovative Perspectives on Intergovernmental Relations”.

Rafael Reuveny, IUB, was panel chair for “Trade and Conflict: The Enduring Debate,” at the American Political Science Association Annual Meeting, August 30-September 2, Chicago, Illinois. Rafael and Quan Li also presented “Disaggregated Bilateral Trade and Interstate Military Conflict Initiation”.

Michael Rushton, IUB, was invited to address the National Rural Economic Development Association meetings in Myrtle Beach, SC, on November 6. He spoke on the topic of the arts and rural economic development.

Bloomington SPEA doctoral students in the Public Affairs Ph.D. Program, along with their co-authors, presented the following papers at the 29th Annual Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management Fall Research Conference, in Washington, D.C. on November 8-10, 2007:

and at the National Tax Association in Columbus, Ohio on November 15-17, 2007: Sharon Kioko, presented a poster, “Are Tax and Expenditure Limits Effective in Constraining Growth in Government Expenditures.”
