Chris Craft, IUB, presented the plenary talk entitled “Tidal Marshes and Climate Change” at the 2nd International Symposium on Wetland Pollutant Dynamics and Control (WETPOL) held at the University of Tartu, Estonia, September 16-20 2007. He also gave a volunteered talk, “Effects of accelerated sea level rise on C, N and P retention by tidal marshes: a landscape simulation”, at the conference.

Monika Herzig, IUB, will present two jazz recitals together with Dr. Cherilee Wadsworth, Chair of Performing Arts at Illinois Central College at Illinois State University and Illinois Central College on Saturday, November 3 and Sunday, November 4.

Ron Hites, IUB, will speak on “Chemicals as Environmental Pollutants” on Friday, October 5, at Lenoir-Rhyne College, Hickory, North Carolina.

Shelia Kennedy, IUPUI, delivered the "Constitution Day" speeches at the University of Evansville on September 17th and at the Jasper campus of Vincennes University on September 24th. Shelia was also interviewed by Rev. Barry Lynn about her most recent book, God and Country: America in Red and Blue for his syndicated radio program, Culture Shocks.

Les Lenkowsky, IUPUI and IUB, took part in session of the Indiana Association for Community and Economic Development, titled: “Community Development and Philanthropy: Public Dialogue in the Marketplace.” at the Indianapolis Convention Center on September 20.  The co-panelist was Michael Rubinger, CEO of LISC, and the program was moderated by John Katzenberger of the Indianapolis Star. Les will also participate in a conference on “The Role of Governments in Pursuing the Common Good, ” at Hillsdale College, Hillsdale, MI, on September 29, delivering a paper titled “Benevolence: The Difficult Art of Giving.”

SPEA IUB MSES students Mark Loomis, Lauren Reker, Kristen Mickelson, and Pam Brown participated in a freshwater wetland creation project in eastern Monroe County on September 13, 2007. The project, Moravec Lake, involved creation of a 0.6-acre wetland by grading and seeding with native wetland plant species. The wetland is being created to mitigate for the loss of wetland and aquatic resources caused by construction of a three-acre pond on the property. The created marsh will serve as a focal point of teaching and research activities for students in Wetlands Ecology (E440) and Restoration Ecology (E534).

Thursday, October 4, at the Westin in New York City, SPEA and IU’s Kelley School of Business co-hosted a panel discussion on the intersection of the environment and business. Topic: “The Green Economy –Opportunity or Obligation?” Moderating was senior writer at SmartMoney magazine and Kelley grad Russell Pearlman – a leading international journalist. Panelists included SPEA alum Kyle Tanger, Principal, Clear Carbon Consulting, Washington, D.C. (MPA/MSES ’99); Ross Warner, vice president, Energy Trading and Marketing, Credit Suisse; Matthew Auer, IUB, professor and director of undergraduate programs, Indiana University, School of Public and Environmental Affairs and editor-in-chief of the public policy journal, Policy Sciences; John W. Maxwell, professor of business economics and public policy, Kelley School of Business.
