Beth Gazley, IUB, and Laura Littlepage, IUPUI, received $24,970 from the Center on Philanthropy and the Lilly Endowment, to study the effective management of student service-learners in Indiana community agencies. Service-learning is assumed to offer benefits for all partners, and colleges and policymakers have actively promoted an increase in student civic engagement. This study focuses on potential challenges, and will inform public policy by developing our understanding of agency capacity to host service-learners and effective volunteer management tools. Gazley and Michael McGuire, IUB, received $5,000 from the Smith Richardson Foundation to develop a model syllabus on networks and public management. The Gazley and McGuire submission was selected as a finalist in the first round of the syllabus competition. The winners will be announced in October. Wolfgang Bielefeld, IUPUI, with Joseph Galaskiewicz and Myron Dowell, received the Best Journal Article award from the Public and Nonprofit Division of the Academy of Management at the Academy's Annual Meeting in Philadelphia for their article: "Networks and Organizational Growth: A Study of Community Based Nonprofits," published in Administrative Science Quarterly, 51: 337-380. The following SPEA alumni visited campus on Thursday, September 6 as panelists in the SPEA Alumni Panel and Reception, which focused on public finance: Jason Beal, BSPA ’93, MPA’94, Principal, Budgeting & Revenue Management Solutions, SAP-Certified Integrator of SAP Public Services; Heidi Dickman, BSPA, Cert. ’06, Financial Analyst, H.J. Umbaugh and Associates; Jason Dudich, BSPA ’01, Director of Strategic Finance, Family and Social Services Administration (formerly a budget analyst for the Indiana State Budget Agency); Belvia Hiadari, MPA ’05, Financial Analyst, H.J. Umbaugh and Associates; Christian Sigman, MPA ’89, Assistant County Administrator, Hamilton County Ohio; and Alice Wiegand, BSPA ’03, MPA ’06, Budget Analyst, State of Indiana. Evan Ringquist, IUB, is a member of a research team that received a research grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the project "Total Maximum Daily Loads: Understanding and Fostering Successful Results." Ringquist and Milena Neshkova, IUB (SPEA PhD program), received a research grant from the National Science Foundation for the project "Local and Regional Interests in the EU and Democratic Representation." Christopher Craft, IUB, is the newly elected vice president of the Society of Wetland Scientists (SWS). SWS is a 3500-member international organization dedicated to fostering sound wetland science, management, and education. Chris will be installed as vice president at the annual meetings June 10-15 in Sacramento, CA and will become president of the Society in 2008. Les Lenkowsky, IUPUI and IUB, will be participating as a judge for the Social Entrepreneurship Award program of the Manhattan Institute in New York City on May 14. This is a nationally known contest that honors innovative “social enterprises.” He will be traveling to Australia on May 19th as the Helene Waislitz Fellow at the Asia-Pacific Centre for Philanthropy and Social Investment at Swinburne University of Technology, in Melbourne, where he will be spend five weeks lecturing on philanthropy throughout Australia. Michael McGuire and Beth Gazley, both IUB, are finalists and recipients of a $5,000 development grant for a syllabus competition. The Networks and Public Management Syllabus Competition is sponsored by the Smith Richardson Foundation. The competition seeks course syllabi on teaching networks and public management." Robert Ramsey, IUE, received the Horizon Award at the Honors Day Convocation held at Richmond, Indiana’s Civic Hall Performing Arts Center on April 22, 2007. Dr. Ramsey was recognized for his impressive integration of teaching, service, scholarship, experiential learning, and community engagement. IU East’s Chancellor David J. Fulton presided over the program, and was also the keynote speaker. The Horizon Award was established in 1997 to recognize faculty members who demonstrate excellence in the classroom.
