Kirsten A. Grønbjerg and David Reingold, both IUB served as discussants for a session on: “Civil Society Organizations and the State in Comparative and Interdisciplinary Perspective” at the International Studies Association annual meetings in San Francisco, March 25-30. Kirsten also presented “Incorporated but Not IRS-Registered: Exploring the Fringes of the Nonprofit Universe” by Kirsten Grønbjerg, Helen Liu (SPEA Ph.D. student) and Thomas Pollak (Urban Institute) at the Fifth Annual West Coast Nonprofit Data Conference, Phoenix, April 4-5.

Sheila Kennedy, IUPUI, spoke to the International Interfaith Initiative on March 23, 2008 about the interplay of religion and public policy, and the research she had conducted for her recent book God and Country: America in Red and Blue.

Les Lenkowsky, IUB and IUPUI, has presented or will be presenting the following:

  • Tuesday, April 8, lecture to a group of students at the University of Tehran (Iran) on the topic of Islam and democracy. Via Polycom and as part of the Global Crossroads project at IUPUI where a class of students was involved as well.
  • Friday, April 11, he will be presenting a paper, “Philanthropy in the Holy Land,” for the International Public Affairs Association conference at SPEA.
  • April 14, he will be participating in a panel at the annual meeting of the Association of Governing Boards, which will be held in Boston. The topic is “The Case for National Service.”
  • April 16, he will be speaking to and commenting on project presentations for Leadership Bloomington Monroe County, here in Bloomington.

Flynn Picardal, IUB, was a co-author on the poster presentation of Melissa Barlett, a SPEA postdoctoral researcher, “Formation of Cell Clusters and Connective Appendages in Agrobacterium tumefaciens under Oxygen Limiting Conditions” at the 2008 Joint Spring Meeting of the Indiana Branch and Ohio Branch of the American Society for Microbiology at Ball State University March 28-29, 2008.
