2006 Teaching Awards at IUB were presented April 2 to: Sergio Fernandez
and William W. Jones for Graduate Instruction; Orville
Powell and Marc Lame for Undergraduate Instruction;
Ann-MarieThomson, as Adjunct Faculty; and Tatyana
Ruseva, PhD Teaching. Philip S. Stevens and Lois
R. Wise received Trustee Teaching Awards
Lisa Bingham, IUB, was quoted in an article that appeared
in the Tampa Tribune recently. “Environmental Fines Decline With Interest,”
by Kevin Begos (kbegos@tampatrib.com),
was published in the March 22, 2006 edition.
Burney Fischer, IUB, received a teaching grant of $20,746
from the Indiana DNR Urban Forest Conservation Fund for his project entitled
“Establishing an Urban Forestry Course at IU-SPEA Bloomington.”
Also, Burney Fischer, IU Landscape Architect Mia Williams, and the Bloomington
Parks and Recreation and City Forestry Departments leadership met with Mayor
Kruzan on Wednesday, April 6, to discuss the Indiana Emerald Ash Borer situation
and the planning for its arrival to Monroe County.
Sheila Kennedy, IUPUI, delivered the keynote luncheon speech
at the 2006 Midwest Student Sociology Conference at Marian College on April
1.
Julia Owens, a senior majoring in criminal justice at IUE,
recently received a $1,000 scholarship award from Alpha Phi Sigma, the National
Criminal Justice Honor Society. This award was established in honor of Metro-Dade
Police Detective, Cheryl Seiden, who was killed in the line of duty. Applicants
submitted a paper discussing “The Evolving Role of Women in Law Enforcement.”
Julie is president of the IU East chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma and is also
active in the Criminal Justice Club. She recently retired from the Wayne
County, Indiana, Sheriff’s Department after over 20 years of service.

Stephen Ziegler, IPFW, received the 2006 SPEA Teaching
Excellence Award for full-time faculty.
