Congratulations to Bob Agranoff, IUB, for being selected the 2008 recipient of the SPAR (Section on Public Administration Research, American Society for Public Administration) Book Award for Managing Within Networks: Adding Value to Public Organizations. Bob will be awarded a plaque and a check at the annual section meeting in Dallas on Saturday, March 8.

Sheila Kennedy, IUPUI, moderated a Candidate Forum on February 20, among the three candidates running in a special election to fill the rest of Julia Carson’s term as 7th District Congressperson: Andre Carson (Dem.), Jon Elrod (Rep.), and Sean Shepard (Libertarian). The forum was sponsored by Indiana Equality, Equality Foundation, Human Rights Campaign, Interfaith Coalition on Nondiscrimination, Log Cabin Republicans, Stonewall Democrats, National Black Justice Coalition, and the Indiana Word.

The Office of Energy & Defense Development is offering two day-long environmentally themed courses to be held at SPEA in March:
  • March 7
    9:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m., SPEA 278, Bloomington
    SW 101 – Solar Domestic Hot Water Systems
    This course is designed to give students a strong introduction to solar water heating systems. The course will cover the most popular types of solar collectors, their construction, their mounting and efficiency rating to familiarize students with what is available. The will also outline the components of solar water heating systems focusing on ICS, closed loop antifreeze and drainback systems. Students will learn best siting practices and considerations that will affect the location of the array and balance of system components.

  • March 28
    9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., SPEA 278, Bloomington
    PV 101 – Basic Photovoltaics – IU
    Participants in this workshop will learn the basics of photovoltaic systems. They will learn to define PV, understand how PV works, identify the four PV system types, describe and identify components, understand the best application and limitations of each system type, define the solar window, understand energy efficiency and load estimates, identify PV mounting types and understand the basics of site assessment tools.
