Prof. O'Meara's main field of interest is comparative politics and development. He has been concerned with African politics in general and specifically with Southern African politics. His particular focus has been on aspects of opposition, conflict, and nationalism. His interests also include political theory, and he has taught courses in this area. His course offerings include comparative and international development, urban politics, public policy, and ethics and the public sector. Professor O'Meara's publications include: Southern Africa: The Continuing Crisis, 2nd Edition, co-edited with Gwendolen M. Carter (Indiana Univesity Press, 1982); International Politics in Southern Africa, co-edited with Gwendolen M. Carter (Indiana University Press, 1982); African Independence: The First Twenty-Five Years, co-edited with Gwendolen M. Carter (Indiana University Press, 1985); Africa, 3rd Edition, co-edited with Phyllis M. Martin (Indiana University Press, 1995); a chapter in Revolutions of the Twentieth Century, (eds. Ted Gurr and Jack Goldstone; a chapter in A Foundation Built on the Sand: The Unraveling of the Apartheid Order (ed. by R. Hunt Davis, Jr.). Two new books have recently appeared, Globalization and the Challenges of a New Century, edited with Howard Mehlinger and Matt Krain (Indiana University Press, 2000) and Changing Perspectives on International Education (Indiana University Press, 2001). He has also published numerous articles, including articles on Zimbabwe, South Africa (co-authored with N. Brian Winchester), and Africa (co-authored with N. Brian Winchester), in Encyclopedia Americana Annual Yearbook (Grolier, Inc., 1985-2000).
