Professional Staff Advising

Counseling Sessions: Students may request appointments or come in during Drop-In Counseling to obtain assistance with career-related issues from resume reviews to salary negotiations.

Workshops: Office of Career Services will work with student organizations to organize workshops on various topics, such as; interviewing skills, networking strategies, and job search techniques, all tailored to meet students’ interests and needs.

On-Campus Assistance

On-Campus Recruiting: During the fall and spring semesters, employers from the public, private, and non-profit sectors visit SPEA to conduct on-campus interviews for full-time employees and interns.

Trips

Spring Break Trip: Every year, we plan events for the week of spring break in Washington D.C. Events include a large reception for alumni and students, and visits with various organizations.

Indianapolis & Chicago Trips: We will also work with student organizations to arrange short trips throughout each semester to Indianapolis and Chicago to meet with various employers.

Federal Government and Washington, D.C.

Presidential Management Fellows Program (PMF): Office of Career Services coordinates the PMF program for SPEA graduate students. In order to maximize a candidate’s chance for selection into this prestigious program, the office conducts training and simulated assessment sessions to prepare students for their evaluations.

Washington Leadership Program (WLP): WLP is a wonderful opportunity available to SPEA undergraduate students. You have an opportunity to spend a semester in our nation's capital and intern with a prestigious governmental or nonprofit agency, while attending seminars taught by a SPEA professor.

Alumni Outreach

Mentor Connections: An opportunity for a student to get career advice and guidance directly from an alumnus with an academic background or professional career congruent with the student’s own interests and goals.

Networking: If you want to ask questions about working in an agency, living in a particular area, or if you are curious about the demands of particular fields, we can find one of our many SPEA alumni to speak with you.

The Library

Copy Machine: SPEA students may copy career-related material at no charge.

Fax/Student Telephone: SPEA students may make free long distance phone calls and send free faxes if they are related to their job or internship search. Students may also receive career-related faxes in Office of Career Services.

Reference Materials: The bookcases are divided into topic areas; each section has books, directories, and other publications. Topic areas include:

  • International
  • Environmental
  • Non-Profit
  • Health
  • Public Management & Finance
  • Government
  • Internships, and
  • General Career Resources

In addition, there are separate sections for internship materials and general job search guides.

Computer Resources

SPEACareers.com: Web based registration program that allows students to create resumes, post them to a web resume book, participate in on-campus recruiting and view job postings.

Internet Resources: We provide many links via internet in a variety of areas that will assist you in your job/internship search.

Computer Stations: Three stations are available for e-mail and web searches. Please note that these do not have any word processing programs and are not connected to a printer.
