Scholarships, Fellowships, and Awards

For continuing students enrolled in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs

Thank you for your interest in SPEA’s scholarships and fellowships. This year’s application deadline was 5:00 p.m., Friday, January 18, 2008 except for the two Devitte Scholarships and the newly funded Indiana Society of Hazardous Materials Management Scholarship which have a deadline of 5:00 p.m., Friday, February 1, 2008.

A. James Barnes Scholarship -- Sarah Bielski is the 2008-09 Recipient.

Established to honor A. James Barnes, SPEA's dean from 1988 to 2000, for his twelve years of leadership and loyal service. The scholarship was created to enable students to engage in nonpaying or low-paying internships in public service in either the public or non-profit sector.
Amount: $1,600
Eligibility:

Undergraduate or graduate students
Demonstrated leadership potential
Strong interest in a career in public service

Melissa Laney Clark Graduate Fellowship -- Elizabeth Bosecker, Moira Rojas, and Nicholas Tackett are the 2008-09 Recipients.

Established to assist promising graduate students in honor of the achievements of Melissa Laney Clark, the fellowship assists students who are pursuing an MSES or a joint MSES/MPA degree.
Amount: $3,000
Eligibility:

Master of Science in Environmental Science students
Master of Science in Environmental Science/Master of Public Affairs students
Financial need

Jesse Devitte Disabled Student Scholarship -- Shawna Ryan is the 2008-09 Recipient.

Established as a tribute to Senator Bob Dole, friend and mentor of SPEA alumnus Jesse Devitte. The scholarship honors Dole, who was disabled during World War II, by supporting a student with a physical disability.
Amount: $1,000

Undergraduate or graduate student
Student with physical disability

Jesse Devitte Endowed Scholarship/Fellowship Fund -- Matthew Deaner is the 2008-09 Recipient.

Created by SPEA alumnus Jesse Devitte, BSPA 1980, to honor a student who is a parent and who is also working his or her way through school. The award recognizes outstanding dedication as well as provides financial support.
Amount: $1,500
Eligibility:

Undergraduate or graduate student
Student must be employed
Student must be a parent
Financial need

Steven D. Eisenach Memorial Fellowship -- Zachary Graber is the 2008-09 Recipient.

Established by friends and family of SPEA alumnus Steven Eisenach, MPA 1980, to honor the memory of an exceptional individual. The Fellowship will support a bright and promising student pursuing an MPA degree.
Amount: $1,300
Eligibility:

Master of Public Affairs student
Demonstrated academic achievement
Financial need

Robert H. Frowick Memorial Graduate Scholarship -- Lisa Martin-Leenhouts is the 2008-09 Recipient.

Established as a memorial tribute to Ambassador Robert H. Frowick, by his family, in honor of his exemplary service as a foreign diplomat, genuine dedication and commitment to making a difference in the world, and for his pioneering service in foreign affairs, promoting democracy in Eastern Europe. Amount: $1,000
Eligibility:

Graduate student born in the Midwestern states of Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota, or Wisconsin.
Demonstrated academic achievement
Preference is given to a student who demonstrates an interest in a Foreign Service career

Indiana Society of Hazardous Materials Management Scholarship -- Jenna Morrison is the 2008-09 Recipient.

Established to encourage those in the study of environmental waste as encouraged by the ISHMM.
Amount: $500
Eligibility:

Undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in SPEA Bloomington
Interest in the study of environmental science, environmental waste or study related to hazardous materials
Demonstrated financial need
Maintained academic excellence of 3.0 GPA or above
Preference given to student from State of Indiana
Student must provide a resume of educational course work and relevant work experience and be willing to present to the ISHMM on a relevant area of research

Eileen McDavid Memorial Fellowship -- Anthony White is the 2008-09 Recipient.

Established to honor the memory of SPEA graduate Eileen McDavid. The fellowship, funded by friends and family of Ms. McDavid, supports second-year MPA students.
Amount: $500
Eligibility:

Master of Public Affairs students
Second-year graduate students

Schuchman Family Scholarship in Resource Conservation and Recycling -- Jenna Morrison is the 2008-09 Recipient.

Established by Larry Schuchman in honor of the family’s long-time commitment to resource conservation and recycling. The Scholarship assists undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in the fields of recycling and solid waste management.
Amount: Up to $2,500

Undergraduate or graduate student
Financial need
Preference to students interested in a career in resources conservation, recycling, and/or solid waste management.

Roy W. Shin Fellowship

Established to honor Professor Emeritus Roy W. Shin. The fellowship supports doctoral students doing dissertation research in energy or environmental policy in northeast Asia and those who intend to pursue a career in teaching and research activities.
Amount: Up to $2,500
Eligibility:

Doctoral students doing dissertation research
Outstanding academic achievement
Preference given to students doing research in energy or environmental policy in northeast Asia

Daniel E. Willard Fellowship in Wetlands Research -- Stephanie Redick is the 2008-09 Recipient.

Established as a tribute to Professor Emeritus Daniel E. Willard, the fellowship supports an outstanding student pursuing a master's degree in environmental science with a strong interest in a career in public service. The award recognizes a student who best embodies Professor Willard's dedication and commitment to wetlands research.
Amount: up to $3,000
Eligibility:

Graduate student
Demonstrated commitment to wetland research
High academic standing

SPEA Alumni Association Scholarship:

The School of Public & Environmental Affairs (SPEA) Alumni Association is proud to sponsor three $1000 scholarships for current SPEA students. The scholarships will be awarded to two undergraduates and one graduate student, from any IU campus, who meet the following qualifications:
Amount: Up to three scholarships at $1,000 each
Eligibility:

Current SPEA student, to complete your final year of school in the academic year 2008-2009.
A minimum GPA of 3.0, you must provide transcript to show proof of academic status. Unofficial transcripts may be submitted, but will be verified for accuracy
Completion of a 1-2 page essay on why you should be awarded this scholarship. Highlight your merits/achievements, including academic success, public and community service, and extracurricular activities.
Submit a letter of recommendation from a SPEA faculty member or a community leader. Letter should be addressed to the SPEA Alumni Association Board of Directors.
Complete the applicant data form.

The Herbert Yardley Espionage Essay Contest Award
Entry Deadline - March 15, 2008
Open to all I.U. SPEA Bloomington Graduate Students

Named in honor of native Hoosier and founder of modern-day cryptography in America, Herbert Yardley, this essay contest is open to all Indiana University SPEA graduate students. The best original essay on the topic of Intelligence Challenges in the 21st Century will receive a $500 cash prize*. The entry deadline is March 15, 2008. The winner will be announced on April 5th during a Spring Symposium on Intelligence to be held on the Bloomington campus of Indiana University.

*This is not a scholarship but an award that is subject to taxes as stipulated by IRS guidelines.
