Some of the biggest and best claims of the university are:

  • A ranking in the top five by Thomas A. Gaines in his book, The Campus as a Work of Art. Citing the beauty and design of the campus, which consists of Indiana limestone buildings in Collegiate Gothic style, Gaines said, “IU never lost sight of its design goal—creating urban and floral images as it grew. Students must walk through hilly gardens and woods to get to classes, to the dorms, to the library.”

  • An enrollment of nearly 38,000 students from all 50 states and more than 125 foreign countries; a minority enrollment of about 10 percent of the student body.

  • The Musical Arts Center, home to IU opera, orchestra, and ballet performances, cited by Beverly Sills as a facility that “rivals the Met” in design and acoustics.
  • The world’s largest student union, with a 200-room hotel, several restaurants, a bookstore, and a bowling alley.

  • Some 75 research centers, 34 libraries, more than 5,000 course offerings, 330 degree programs, and nearly 1,600 faculty members.

  • Athletic teams that are often contenders for national titles, most recently our seventh NCAA national championship in soccer.

  • Academic programs in 74 languages, from Arabic to Zulu.

  • Of IU’s academic programs, 86 rank in the top 20 nationally, including the School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

  • Yahoo! ranked IU Bloomington as one of the “most wired” campuses in America.
