Special and Placement Credit in German
Students who have taken either:
- a standardized German achievement test (like the one from the Bureau of Evaluative Studies and Testing [BEST, Franklin Hall M005, 855-1595])
or - the ETS German Advanced Placement test while still in high school may be eligible to receive IU placement and special credit based on their score (see the undergraduate secretary).
On the basis of an exam score a student can receive IU credit for previously acquired knowledge of German and can be placed into the appropriate course to continue her/his studies. Credit is given as follows:
- Placement credit is 4 or 8 hours that is added automatically by the College of Arts and Sciences to the permanent records of students who have officially tested out of German G100, or G100 and G150.
- Special credit is credit (3 or 6 hours) that the student must apply for after having successfully (with a C- or higher) completed the language course above G200 into which s/he was placed.* (For example, if a student tests into G250, s/he can apply for three hours of special credit in G200 after successfully completing G250; should a student test into G300 or a higher course, s/he can apply for six hours of special credit in G200 and G250 after successfully completing G300 or the higher course.) Special note: All special credit is awarded by the College of Arts and Sciences recorders office not the Department. International students may not earn credit or be awarded special credit for any courses at the first- or second-year level in their native languages.

Special Credit in Dutch
Special credit is also available to qualified students in Dutch. There is, however, no standardized exam to determine placement. Interested students should see the undergraduate secretary.
The College of Arts and Sciences Foreign Language Requirement
Students must complete the study of a single foreign language through the second semester of the second year of college-level course work. The Department of Germanic Studies now offers four language options for this requirement: Dutch, German, Norwegian, and Yiddish.
Please note:
- all or part of this requirement may be fulfilled by performance on placement tests.
- students may fulfill the whole requirement by placing into the third-year level.
- international students may fulfill the foreign language requirement through demonstrated proficiency in their native languages (contact the Office of the Undergraduate Academic Deans, Kirkwood Hall 012, 855-1647).
