Application Deadlines and Other Information
The Department of Germanic Studies seeks to admit outstanding students who have completed a B.A. or the equivalent, and who show potential for successful work at the graduate level. (Students from Germany must complete the Zwischenprüfung and one full year of Hauptstudium to be considered for admission to the M.A. program.)
Students who do not need financial support may apply for admission at any time, preferably several months before matriculation. Applicants who wish to be considered for financial support should turn in all application materials, including GRE scores, by January 15 (December 1 for international students) for fall enrollment. Please note that we require all international students to submit TOEFL scores. Applications received after this date will be given every consideration possible, although late application may prevent the applicant from being considered for financial support in the first round of selection. We will keep you informed about the status of your application.
A limited amount of financial aid--in the form of associate instructorships or fellowships, and fee remissions--is offered annually to entering students. Support is not ordinarily available for students entering in the spring, although exceptions do occur. A stated above, to receive full consideration for an offer of financial aid on the normal schedule, your application should be complete and in our office by January 15, or by December 1 if you are an international student.
